Frequently Asked Questions
About the mobile gym
What is SRQ Tails In Motion?
SRQ Tails In Motion brings a mobile dog gym to you for individualized, supervised canine fitness and enrichment directly to your home or approved appointment location. The mobile gym is within an air conditioned trailer and is equipped with two slat mills or dog treadmills. The dog gym provides a controlled setting for structured exercise, mental engagement, and movement tailored to your dog’s comfort, fitness level, and goals.
Is the slat mill motorized?
No. Our slat mills are dog-powered, not motorized. There is no motor setting the pace or pulling the belt underneath your dog. The belt moves only when your dog walks or runs, which means your dog controls the speed throughout the session.
What happens if my dog slows down or stops?
Because the mill is self-powered, the belt slows down when your dog slows down and stops when your dog stops. Your dog is never required to “keep up” with a motorized belt or a preset speed.
What is the running surface made of?
The running surface is made of individual rubber slats rather than a standard moving carpet belt. The textured rubber helps provide traction, while the slatted design and built-in suspension help create a smoother, more comfortable surface during supervised exercise.
Is the slat mill hard on a dog’s joints?
The rubber slats and shock-absorbing design are intended to reduce vibration and impact compared with a rigid running surface. That said, every dog is different, so sessions are individualized and adjusted for age, fitness level, gait, health history, comfort, and conditioning needs. Dogs with medical, orthopedic, or mobility concerns may need veterinary guidance before participating.
How do harnesses keep dogs safe on the slat mill?
A properly fitted, padded harness is required for slat mill sessions. The harness attaches to a tether or guide point on the frame, which helps keep your dog centered on the running surface and prevents them from stepping off the sides or drifting backward.
The harness is designed to support balance and positioning without restricting natural movement. It also provides a secure attachment point so the handler can guide, support, or gently assist the dog as needed while keeping both hands free to monitor gait, comfort, and safety.
Collars are not used for tethering on the slat mill because of the potential for neck strain or injury. All dogs are individually sized for a comfortable, well-fitted harness before their session.
Can a dog’s nails get caught in the slat mill?
Our slat mill is designed with closely spaced rubber slats to minimize gaps and reduce the risk of nails catching in the running surface. The harness and tether system also help keep dogs centered and prevent their paws from drifting into areas where slats meet the rollers.
To further reduce any risk, we request that all clients keep their dog’s nails trimmed short before each session. Overgrown or long nails can more easily snag on equipment, cause discomfort, or increase the chance of a split or injury. If nails are excessively long, a session may need to be rescheduled until they are trimmed.
If you are unsure how short to trim, ask your veterinarian or groomer for guidance. A good rule of thumb is that nails should not constantly touch the ground when your dog is standing on a flat surface.
What dogs can benefit from a mobile gym?
The service may be a good fit for high-energy dogs, dogs needing a structured outlet, busy households, dogs that benefit from more consistent movement, dogs who are not comfortable in group settings, and owners looking for a convenient alternative to outdoor exercise in Florida heat or bad weather.
Every dog is considered individually. The goal is safe, appropriate exercise—not pushing dogs to meet a predetermined speed, distance, or time.
Is the mobile gym appropriate for puppies, seniors, or dogs with mobility concerns?
Possibly, but each dog is evaluated individually. Puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with medical or orthopedic history may need a slower introduction, shorter activity periods, modified sessions, or veterinary clearance before participating. For regular sessions, dogs should be at least 12 months old for small and medium breeds, and 15–18 months for large and giant breeds, or until a veterinarian confirms skeletal maturity. Younger puppies are not enrolled in standard treadmill running. Very brief, controlled acclimation may be considered for younger puppies only with explicit veterinary clearance and owner consent.
SRQ Tails In Motion is not a replacement for veterinary care, physical therapy, or rehabilitation. If your dog has a medical condition, recent surgery, injury, lameness, breathing concern, heart condition, or exercise restriction, please speak with your veterinarian before booking. AVMA guidance recommends starting new exercise programs gradually and consulting a veterinarian when a dog has health concerns or signs such as lameness, breathing difficulty, or unusual fatigue.
First visit and safety
How do I get started?
Start by completing the Service Request Form. We will review your dog’s health, behavior, goals, location, parking setup, and service needs before confirming whether the service is a good fit.
New clients may be asked to complete a phone consultation, provide vaccination records, submit veterinary clearance when appropriate, and sign required waivers and agreements before an appointment is scheduled.
What happens during the first appointment?
The first visit is intentionally gradual. We focus on helping your dog become comfortable with the new person, trailer, sounds, surfaces, handling, and equipment. Some dogs may do very little treadmill work at the first visit—and that is completely okay.
The goal is to build a positive, safe experience and move at your dog’s pace.
How long is a session?
A standard mobile dog gym session is approximately 30 minutes of supervised exercise and enrichment time for one dog. Greeting, setup, handling, equipment acclimation, rest breaks, water breaks, and cooldown are built into the overall appointment as needed.
Your dog’s safety and comfort always come before completing a specific amount of exercise.
Will my dog be pushed to run?
No. Dogs are never forced to run or continue when they show signs of stress, fear, fatigue, pain, overheating, or disinterest. Sessions are individualized and may involve walking, a gradual introduction to the equipment, short intervals, rest breaks, and enrichment.
What if my dog is nervous around new people or equipment?
Please tell us in the intake form. Many dogs need time to acclimate, and that is expected. We use gradual, positive introductions and will adjust the session to the dog in front of us.
Some dogs may need a meet-and-greet, modified plan, additional acclimation visit, muzzle plan, veterinary input, or may not be a fit for this service. Bite history, severe reactivity, or handling concerns do not automatically mean “no,” but they must be discussed honestly before booking so safety and insurance requirements can be considered.
Do you work with dogs who have bitten or are reactive?
Each case is reviewed individually. Please disclose any bite, snapping, escape, guarding, handling, dog-reactivity, or fear history on the intake form. Depending on the history, we may request a phone consultation, meet-and-greet, veterinary or trainer input, a basket-muzzle plan, or may determine that the requested service is not appropriate. Additionally, services may be provided with owner present to do the handling at all times.
Safety for your dog, other animals, clients, and the handler comes first.
Health and requirements
Are vaccinations required?
Yes. Current rabies vaccination and current vaccination records are required before service begins. Additional vaccination requirements may apply depending on the service, shared-equipment exposure, transport needs, local disease risk, and veterinary recommendations.
Dogs showing signs of contagious illness—including coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, nasal discharge, unexplained lethargy, or known exposure—should not attend a session or be transported until cleared as appropriate.
Do you need my veterinarian’s information?
Yes. We collect your veterinarian’s name and contact information for your client file and emergency planning. Veterinary authorization and emergency-treatment preferences are addressed in the client agreement before service begins.
What if my dog becomes sick, injured, or seems uncomfortable?
Sessions are adjusted, paused, or stopped if a dog shows signs of pain, stress, illness, fatigue, overheating, lameness, or other concerns. We will contact you if there is a concern and may recommend veterinary follow-up before additional services are scheduled.
Service area and travel
What areas do you serve?
SRQ Tails In Motion serves Sarasota and surrounding communities (up to 20 miles outside of SRQ airport), including areas of Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, and parts of Osprey. Service availability depends on driving distance, safe parking, trailer access, route availability, and appointment demand in each area.
Is travel included?
Travel is included for mobile dog gym appointments within 10 driving miles of the Sarasota service base (SRQ Airport).
For appointments outside the core service area:
Travel fee outside of core service area is as follows:
$5 = 10+ to 15 miles
$10=15+ to 20 miles
More than 20 driving miles not currently offered or quoted case by case
Final travel pricing is confirmed before anything is booked.
Can the travel fee be waived?
Yes, sometimes. On scheduled route days, appointments are grouped in the same neighborhood or service area. If SRQ Tails In Motion is already scheduled in your area that day, the travel fee may be waived.
Route-day appointments are limited to available dates and time windows. Clients outside the core zone can choose between a standard appointment with the applicable travel fee or a route-day appointment when one becomes available.
Why is there a travel fee?
A travel fee helps cover the additional drive time, fuel, towing, trailer operation, vehicle wear, and scheduling time needed to bring a mobile service farther from the core service area. It helps keep local pricing fair while allowing SRQ Tails In Motion to serve nearby surrounding communities.
Do I need to provide parking?
Yes. A safe, legal parking space is required for the trailer-based mobile gym—typically a driveway or another private lot with property-owner approval. The first appointment is not confirmed until the location, parking area, clearance, and safe handoff path have been reviewed. Legal street parking may also be utilized but we ask for at least 40ft of clearance for the SUV and trailer.
We do not assume that service can be provided on any street, public lot, park, beach, or managed property without the appropriate permission.
Booking and payment
How much does a mobile dog gym session cost?
See our Service page for more detailed pricing information. Standard mobile dog gym sessions start at $50 per session for one dog, plus any applicable travel fee. Your final total is confirmed before booking.
Package options, recurring scheduling, additional-dog pricing, and introductory offers may be available as the service menu develops.
Do you offer packages or recurring appointments?
Yes. Recurring appointments and multi-session packages may be available for clients who want a more consistent fitness routine. Packages may offer a lower per-session rate, subject to scheduling availability and package terms.
When is payment due?
Payment terms, deposits, cancellation requirements, and accepted payment methods are provided before booking. Payment is generally required in advance or at the time of service, depending on the appointment type and booking arrangement.
What payment methods do you accept?
Accepted payment methods will be confirmed during booking. Website payment options, cash, and card payments may be available. Zelle or other approved payment methods may be offered for established clients.
Other pet services
Do you offer dog walking?
Yes, dog walking may be available for approved clients. Walking services are generally prioritized within a smaller local service area of 8 miles outside of SRQ airport and for recurring, route-based clients, since one-off long-distance walks can require substantial travel time.
Requests outside the standard walking area may be available on scheduled route days, when paired with another nearby appointment, or for recurring clients.
Do you offer pet sitting or drop-in visits?
Pet sitting and drop-in availability depends on your location, service needs, pet type, dates, and existing route. Clients must complete intake information, emergency contacts, veterinary information, home-access instructions, and a service agreement before care begins.
Do you offer pet transportation?
Pet transportation may be available for approved clients, subject to service area, destination, vehicle safety requirements, crate or restraint needs, temperament, vaccination status, and scheduling. Transport is quoted separately because travel time and destination are central to the service.
Client expectations
What do I need to have ready for the appointment?
Please have your dog secured and ready for handoff with the equipment they normally use comfortably, such as a properly fitted harness, collar, and leash. Let us know before the appointment about any recent illness, injury, medication change, behavior change, access issue, or household hazard.
For first visits, an adult client should be present unless another arrangement has been approved in advance.
Can I watch the session?
Yes. You are welcome to be present, especially during the first session. Some dogs focus and acclimate better with their owner nearby; others may do better once they are comfortable working one-on-one. We can determine what supports your dog best.
Can you guarantee results?
No. Every dog responds differently to activity, enrichment, acclimation, handling, and routine. SRQ Tails In Motion provides thoughtful, individualized care and can track participation, but cannot guarantee specific weight-loss, behavioral, conditioning, training outcomes.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged up to the full service fee, except in emergencies or at SRQ Tails In Motion’s discretion. Services may be postponed for unsafe weather, illness, unsafe conditions, or concerns for a dog’s welfare.
